Once a primarily agrarian area made up of farms and tobacco fields, St. Mary's County has recently become a bourgeoning exurban neighbor to the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area, which is the fourth largest, highest-income and most educated combined statistical area of the United States. Due to the high concentration of technical jobs available through Patuxent Naval Air Station, many St. Mary’s County residents both live and work in the county, commanding wages competitive with a larger metro area. The term “Southern Maryland” is a popular usage term to describe the southernmost “Western Shore” of Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay. “Southern Maryland” includes Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's counties and sometimes the southern portions of Anne Arundel and Prince George's counties, the region which has enjoyed an unprecedented surge of growth and popularity with the suburbs of Washington’s expansion south. This expansion has, however, replaced much of Southern Maryland’s formerly predominant southern culture with a tone that is decidedly northeastern, endowing Southern Maryland with a fusion of south and north, a civic culture that is unique in its own right. Southern Maryland is known for its beautiful waters and exceptional seafood. Solomons Island and Chesapeake Beach are favored by locals and tourists alike as a vacation spot or for weekend getaways. Sailing, fishing and a variety of water sports are all favorite regional activities; there are abundant charter companies and marinas serving St. Mary’s County. Dining destinations offer everything from haute cuisine to the blue crabs served on newspaper that Maryland is known for. The Maryland International Raceway, Budds Creek Raceway and the abundant marine fossils of Calvert Cliffs are other area favorites that are not to be missed.
