Patuxent River Naval Air Station, which is also known as NAS Pax River, is located on a peninsula between the Chesapeake Bay and the mouth of the Patuxent River in Southern Maryland’s St. Mary's County. In the years following the war, Patuxent Naval Air Station became a center for testing, as numerous facilities were constructed to this end. Over the years, NAS Pax River has served as the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School (1958), the Weapons Systems Test Division (1960), and the Propulsion System Evaluation Facility, in addition to serving as a test facility for the V-22 Osprey. Today, Patuxent Naval Air Station is home to the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) Headquarters, the Air Test Wing Atlantic, and the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) Commands and hosts the active-duty service members, civil-service employees, defense contractor employees, and military dependents that drive the local economy. Patuxent River Naval Air Museum is one of the must-see destinations when visiting the Lexington Park area of St. Mary’s County.
