In addition to having the oldest documented sheriff's office in Maryland, there are a number of St. Mary’s County properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Patuxent River Naval Air Station, which is also known as NAS Pax River, is located on a peninsula between the Chesapeake Bay and the mouth of the Patuxent River in Southern Maryland’s St. Mary's County. The acreage that makes up Patuxent River Naval Air Station was once farmland, which in addition to a number of sharecropper and tenant properties and several clusters of vacation homes also encompassed the large Mattapony, Susquehanna, and Cedar Point plantations. Some of these old homes now serve as naval personnel quarters. Patuxent River Naval Air Station was commissioned in 1943 and grew quickly in response to World War II. This rapid expansion both gave rise to the Lexington Park community and gave the area a distinct “boom town” feel, where local residents were now joined by workers from all over the country and many high-paying jobs on the station to go around. In the years following the war, Patuxent Naval Air Station became a center for testing, as numerous facilities were constructed to this end. Over the years, NAS Pax River has served as the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School (1958), the Weapons Systems Test Division (1960), and the Propulsion System Evaluation Facility, in addition to serving as a test facility for the V-22 Osprey. Lexington Park, formerly Jarbosville, was named in honor of sunken United States aircraft carrier the USS Lexington. Lexington Park is classified as a census-designated place in Southern Maryland’s St. Mary's County. The Lexington Park community was founded as a result of the establishment of the Patuxent Naval Air Station during World War II. In 1977, construction of the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge, which spans the Patuxent River linked Lexington Park and the Patuxent Naval Air Station to nearby Calvert County and the Southern Maryland resort town of Solomons, making Lexington Park a highly sought after place to reside for civilians as well as the military community of the region.
